Third Mine Visit

Comments

I just happened upon your blog while searching for mines in Somers, NY. I grew up with what everyone in the nieghborhood knew was an abanboned iron mine in the woods in my backyard. It appears to be a pond and to the neighborhood kids it was "the bottomless pond". The water is an orange rusty color and the only things living in it are bull frogs and mosquitos. Anyway, it has been my fathers mission to find out about this mine shaft for many years. Everything in the area of the old mine is rust colored, the soil, the rocks, and the ground water. I grew up drinking bottled water and not being being able to wear white clothing because it would be stained in the washing machine. So my fathers mission was always to find clean ground water and also to find out if the mine was properly closed. My father stumbled upon the name Clover Hill while doing research but couldn't find out much information on it. Infact it was almost like it was a secret. The mine is located at the top of Butler Hill Road in Somers, Ny and is now on private property right next to the road, yet not visible from the road. It is on the left side of the street before you get to the circle. The building that was the headquarters for the mine is now a private residence and located off Butlerville Road in Somers, NY. If you enter Butlerville Road from the 202 side it is the second drive way on the left and there is an old rusty arrow up on a tree pointing the way that may in fact be from the mining days. The old lady that lives there has information on the Clover Hill Mine (if that is in fact what this mine is) and I hear that she is willing to talk about it over tea though no one in my family has ever taken her up on this.
Well, I hope that this might spark your interest to further explore this mine. I could take photographs and send them your way if you like.
[this is good]

Hey Alicen,

I grew up in shenorock and heard many stories about the mines in westchester and putnam counties. I live in florida now , but will be in N.Y. in april for vacation. If possible , please take some pictures and add them to your blog.

Thanks,
